Decisions About Condom Use Among Gay Couples Vary by Race

HealthDay – 1 hr 41 mins ago SUNDAY, July 22 (HealthDay News) -- Decisions about condom use among gay couples vary by race, a new study reveals.

Although black gay couples tend to practice safe sex more often, researchers from San Francisco State University found they don't talk about it. However, white gay couples often do the opposite, they noted. Although these couples discussed condoms, they are more likely to have unprotected sex.

The study authors added their findings are significant since gay men account for the majority of new HIV cases in the United States.

In their report, the researchers examined the behaviors of male couples living in San Francisco and New York City.

They found black couples were more likely to use condoms than white couples, regardless of HIV status. The black couples said that having safe sex was an unspoken rule and condom use was expected.

"Research has shown that some of the fastest-growing HIV cases in the U.S. are among men in couple relationships and among black men. However, we studied black men with black partners and found that they are practicing safe sex," said study leader Colleen Hoff, a professor of sexuality studies, said in a news release from San Francisco State. "This suggests that being in a relationship isn't a risk factor for black men. We need to keep searching for other factors that may explain the high incidence of HIV among this demographic."

The study also revealed that most white couples did not use condoms, regardless of HIV status. These couples reported they came to this decision by talking about the risks and benefits of having unprotected sex. The researchers noted interracial gay couples were not in agreement on whether to use condoms.

White and interracial couples that included partners with different HIV status said the health of the partner with HIV was a big part of their decision to have safe or unprotected sex. Many of these couples believed that if the HIV-positive person is on medication and has a low viral load, they are less likely to spread the disease to their HIV-negative partner, the study found.

The researchers suggested this reflects the belief among some gay couples that advances in HIV treatment reduce the risks associated with the virus.

"When some individuals get tested and hear that they have a lower viral load, they might interpret that decreased risk as no risk and hence use no protection," Hoff said. "It's a calculated risk that they are taking."

Among gay couples that occasionally broke their agreement to practice safe sex, once again race played a role in how they handled the situation, the study showed. Black couples tended to discuss what happened, get tested for HIV and go back to using condoms. Meanwhile, white and interracial gay couples were more likely to continue having unsafe sex.

"We found that black and white gay men process the information they receive about HIV in different ways, and for black men using condoms is the default choice," researcher Chad Campbell said in a news release. "The black gay men we surveyed were aware of the high rates of HIV among their demographic and were taking steps to ensure they don't become another statistic."

The study was expected to be presented on Sunday at the International AIDS Conference in Washington, D.C.

Research presented at medical meetings should be viewed as preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed medical journal.

Talk to Your Kids About the Colorado Killings

HealthDay – Fri, Jul 20, 2012 FRIDAY, July 20 (HealthDay News) -- As word spread Friday that a heavily armed man had shot up a suburban Denver movie theater crowded with families and children for a midnight showing of the new Batman movie, mental health experts offered guidance on how to cope with the tragedy.

While this latest act of carnage unnerved a nation still scarred by the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, psychologists said children and teens may be especially vulnerable to the early Friday shootings in Aurora, Colo., that left 12 people dead and as many as 59 others wounded.

"It would be perfectly normal for people to be more on edge right now," said Simon Rego, director of psychology training at Montefiore Medical Center and Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City. "It's a natural reaction when you hear about, experience or witness a traumatic event. You're primed to be more vigilant about what's happening to you."

But parents can do much to reassure their children that such an incident isn't likely to repeat itself anytime soon, experts said. And it's important to offer that reassurance now.

"This is clearly a very disturbed individual

Good news about the glycemic index of rice

ScienceDaily (July 9, 2012) — Research analysing 235 types of rice from around the world has found its glycemic index (GI) varies from one type of rice to another with most varieties scoring a low to medium GI.

See Also:Health & MedicineDiet and Weight LossDiabetesObesityPlants & AnimalsAgriculture and FoodFoodExtreme SurvivalReferenceBrown riceGlutenBranSouth Beach diet

This finding is good news because it not only means rice can be part of a healthy diet for the average consumer, it also means people with diabetes, or at risk of diabetes, can select the right rice to help maintain a healthy, low GI diet.

The study found that the GI of rice ranges from a low of 48 to a high of 92, with an average of 64, and that the GI of rice depends on the type of rice consumed.

The research team from the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and CSIRO's Food Futures Flagship also identified the key gene that determines the GI of rice, an important achievement that offers rice breeders the opportunity to develop varieties with different GI levels to meet consumer needs. Future development of low GI rice would also enable food manufactures to develop new, low GI food products based on rice.

Dr Tony Bird, CSIRO Food Futures Flagship researcher, said that low GI diets offer a range of health benefits.

Dr Melissa Fitzgerald, who led the IRRI team, said GI is a measure of the relative ability of carbohydrates in foods to raise blood sugar levels after eating.

"Understanding that different types of rice have different GI values allows rice consumers to make informed choices about the sort of rice they want to eat," she said.

"Rice varieties like India's most widely grown rice variety, Swarna, have a low GI and varieties like Doongara and Basmati from Australia have a medium GI."

Dr Tony Bird, CSIRO Food Futures Flagship researcher, said that low GI diets offer a range of health benefits.

"Low GI diets can reduce the likelihood of developing Type 2 diabetes, and are also useful for helping diabetics better manage their condition," he said.

"This is good news for diabetics and people at risk of diabetes who are trying to control their condition through diet, as it means they can select the right rice to help maintain a healthy, low GI diet."

Low GI foods are those measured 55 and less, medium GI are those measured between 56 and 69, while high GI measures 70 and above.

When food is measured to have a 'high GI', it means it is easily digested and absorbed by the body, which often results in fluctuations in blood sugar levels that can increase chances of getting diabetes, and make management of Type 2 diabetes difficult.

Conversely, foods with low GI are those that have slow digestion and absorption rates in the body, causing a gradual and sustained release of sugar into the blood, which has been proven beneficial to health, including reducing the chances of developing diabetes.

Bristol-Myers to buy Amylin for about $5.3 billion

Reuters – Fri, Jun 29, 2012 NEW YORK (Reuters) - Bristol-Myers Squibb Co will buy biotechnology company Amylin Pharmaceuticals Inc for about $5.3 billion in cash, helping Bristol-Myers extend its portfolio of diabetes treatments with the addition of drugs Byetta and Bydureon.

Bristol-Myers said late on Friday it had also reached a follow-on deal with UK-based AstraZeneca Plc to collaborate on developing Amylin's products once the buyout is completed, expanding upon an existing partnership between the two pharmaceutical makers in diabetes treatments. AstraZeneca will pay $3.4 billion in cash for these rights.

Bristol-Myers and AstraZeneca already collaborate on several diabetes treatments including Onglyza, and aim to strengthen their position in a growing, multibillion-dollar market. More than 360 million people worldwide have diabetes, with the overwhelming majority suffering from type 2 diabetes, a condition partly attributable to the rise in obesity in many countries.

In a statement, Bristol-Myers Chief Executive Lamberto Andreotti described the deals as a unique way to build on its relationship with AstraZeneca, which "demonstrates Bristol-Myers Squibb's innovative and targeted approach to partnerships and business development."

The boards of directors at Amylin, Bristol and AstraZeneca have approved the two transactions, the companies said.

Amylin began approaching potential buyers in April after rejecting a previous $3.5 billion takeover bid from Bristol-Myers, and facing pressure from activist investor Carl Icahn.

In all, five pharmaceutical giants including AstraZeneca, Novartis AG and Sanofi SA were in the running for Amylin, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters this week.

LEGACY OF ELI LILLY DEAL

Bristol-Myers will pay $31 per share for Amylin, a premium of 10 percent to the company's closing price on Friday. Amylin's shares had already tripled in value from a low of nearly $8 last October.

Amylin and Eli Lilly Co introduced Byetta for type 2 diabetes in 2005, and the longer-acting version Bydureon, which can be taken once a week, was approved by U.S. regulators earlier this year. Both contain the active ingredient exenatide.

Amylin scrapped its partnership with Lilly in November last year after the two became embroiled in a legal dispute. Bristol-Myers has agreed to pay an additional $1.7 billion to cover Amylin's debt and its obligations to Lilly from ending their collaboration.

Bristol-Myers will finance the purchase from its existing cash resources and credit facilities. Amylin has agreed not to solicit competing offers. The transactions are expected to be dilutive to Bristol-Myers' adjusted earnings in 2012 and 2013 by about 3 cents per share, and become slightly accretive in 2014.

Citi and Evercore are serving as financial advisers to Bristol-Myers and Kirkland & Ellis LLP is its legal adviser. AstraZeneca's financial adviser on the deal is Bank of America Merrill Lynch, while Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP and Covington & Burling LLP are its legal advisers.

Credit Suisse and Goldman Sachs & Co. are acting as financial advisers to Amylin Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP is its legal adviser.

Asking Your Cosmetic Dentist About Porcelain Veneers

June 30, 2012 by admin

Thinking about the different ways to make your smile brighter and more beautiful? If so, then consider a visit to your local cosmetic dentist and ask about the procedure of getting porcelain veneers.

How exactly can porcelain veneer improve your teeth in order to give you a whiter and brighter smile? This is done by first getting a veneer made of porcelain and shaping that veneer into a thin layer than looks and feels like the front of a molar teeth. This thin veneer is then attached to your teeth. This simple procedure has the ability to make crooked teeth look straight, align misshapen teeth, or even just fill a missing gap between missing teeth.

This procedure is very simple! All you will have to do is to go to your local cosmetic dentist and ask for a consultation. He or she will guide you through the different options available — listen carefully, and make sure you ask plenty of questions as to not miss out on any details.

Decide on the color of porcelain veneer you would like to have; and of course, the dentist will want to make sure it matches your current teeth as closely as possible as to make the porcelain veneer look as natural condition.

You could also use porcelain veneer to make your teeth appear whiter, especially if you feel that your teeth are in good condition but could use some whitening procedures as well. This would most likely involve additional teeth whitening sessions, which your local cosmetic dentist would be an expert at.

Getting this procedure done is definitely worth the investment so you could get a nice set of shiny white teeth which would surely improve your smile, your appearance to others, give you a better first impression with the opposite sex, and even increase your confidence.

Consider getting the porcelain veneer procedure done in order to give your teeth a uniform balance as well as a beautiful smile!

FDA warns about counterfeit Adderall tablets

The Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers that a counterfeit version of the attention deficit hyperactivity disorder drug Adderall is being sold over the Internet.

The FDA says the product purports to be 30-milligram Adderall tablets, but it does not contain the right ingredients. The pills contain the pain drugs tramadol and acetaminophen instead. The agency says the counterfeit tablets are white and round, and they do not have any markings like letters or numbers. Genuine Adderall tablets are an orange/peach color and have the letters "dp" embossed on one side with the number 30 on the opposite side.

Adderall is made by Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd., and it is used to treat ADHD and narcolepsy. The drug is in short supply because of shortages of the active ingredients.

FDA warns MS patients about risky treatment

Reuters – 1 hr 36 mins ago WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. drug regulators are warning people with multiple sclerosis that an experimental treatment that props open internal veins in the neck and chest can cause death or serious injury.

The Food and Drug Administration on Thursday said at least two people had died from the procedure, which uses stents or balloon angioplasties to widen veins that connect the brain and spinal cord to the heart. One person was permanently paralyzed, and others had bleeding in the brain, suffered strokes, blood clots or other side effects.

It is unknown how many people received the treatment and how many had problems, as stents and angioplasties are not approved for this use by the FDA, the agency said. Stents are steel mesh coils that can keep arteries open, while balloon angioplasties use a balloon at the tip of a catheter to open blocked blood vessels.

The FDA could not immediately identify the stent models being used in such treatments.

The FDA announcement relates to a controversy that has developed in the multiple sclerosis (MS) community about the causes of the chronic, progressive disorder of the brain and spinal cord.

The disease, which affects about 2.5 million people worldwide and has no cure, attacks the central nervous system and can lead to numbness, paralysis and loss of vision. Drugs that treat the condition, from companies like Biogen Idec Inc and Sanofi SA, can often only prevent relapses or slow its progression.

The underlying cause of MS is unknown. Some researchers believe that although it is typically thought of as a disorder of the immune system, it may actually be caused by blood vessel changes. Their theory is that veins bringing blood from the brain and spine back to the heart sometimes become too narrow, making blood leak back into the brain tissue. They say that could trigger inflammation, eventually causing the balance and muscle problems seen in MS.

Other scientists have not been able to show a link between MS and compromised blood flow, which is called chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency, or CCSVI, or prove the condition exists at all.

Meanwhile, MS patients seek new treatments, prompting patient advocacy and research groups to invest in more research studying the link between multiple sclerosis and CCSVI.

"Our position is that the evidence is simply insufficient to determine whether there's a link," said Dr. William Maisel, deputy director and chief scientist of the FDA's devices division. "We want patients to be aware this treatment (with stents or balloon angioplasty) is unproven, that there are significant risks associated with the treatment, (and) the benefits are uncertain."

The FDA said people who want to try the experimental treatment should first discuss the risks with their doctor, or should try the treatment while participating in clinical trials.

All about Wrinkle Cream Products

golden years’. This skin dilemma basically develops once the skin loses its natural capability to produce collagen and elastin, the ones that give the skin its elasticity, due to old age. With the decreasing number of collagen and elastin in the body, the components stretching the skin disappear, thus leading to the development of wrinkles and fine lines.

Though technology and science still hasn’t come up with something that can totally counter aging, it has at least devised some methods which we can use to minimize the effects of this unstoppable part of life. One is through the invention of skin care products like wrinkle creams. At present, hundreds of wrinkle cream brands are available, making it impossible for anyone plagued with this skin problem not to find a solution to their dilemmas.

Consumers should look for the best wrinkle cream products with the best ingredients as much as possible.

Matrixyl is a component considered as one of the most sought-after ingredients in the wrinkle cream industry because of its capability of improving the healing of the skin. As compared to other ingredients, Matrixyl also works in the DNA level, meaning that its effects are longer-lasting and more natural-looking. This ingredient triggers the skin to produce healthy amounts of collagen once again so that the skin can develop elasticity despite of old age.

Another top ingredient in wrinkle cream products is Renovage. Just like Matrixyl, it treats directly the skin cells to help fight the signs caused by aging. According to clinical tests, this ingredient has the ability to bring back the old processes of the skin that wer lost due to old age by as much as 60%.

Moreover, studies have also supported that it improves the skin’s ability to regenerate itself and fight the toxins that also cause other skin problems by 75%.
