Snacking and Skipping Breakfast Linked to Type 2 Diabetes
The phrase “death by snacking” is not too far from the truth, especially if a person is overweight and struggles to lose weight. Two new studies confirm the dangers of snacking, something I have been adamant about since the release of Mastering Leptin in 2002.
Both studies appeared recently in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. The first followed 29,206 U.S. men who were free of metabolic disease for 16 years. It found that skipping breakfast was associated with a 21 percent increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes, which is why the Leptin Diet tells you to start your metabolic engines with a high protein breakfast. This study also confirmed the relationship between a high BMI Body Mass Index. BMI is a statistical measurement of body weight based on the person's height and weight. It does not actually measure the body fat percentage but provides an estimation of a healthy body weight. Normal BMI for adults ranges from 18.5-24.9, snacking, and the risk for type 2 diabetes.
Another controlled human study found that snacking caused a loss of the ability to sense fullness, resulting in consumption of larger and larger snacks. Snacking appears to induce a repetitive strain injury to your taste and pleasure system, making them numb to normal intake.
The more food you eat, the fatter you are likely to become, which is news to nobody. Figuring out how to feel satisfied on less food is the trick. This is why following the Five Rules of the Leptin Diet is so important.
When you do not have leptin working to your advantage then leptin entry into your brain is decreased while leptin levels in your blood elevate, a problem known as leptin resistance. In addition to leptin, the other important hormone made by your fat is adiponectin Protein hormone that modulates metabolism including glucose and fatty acid catabolism. High levels are associated with low body fat. . Both of these hormones are made in tandem when you are metabolically healthy. Once you develop leptin resistance, then your adiponectin Protein hormone that modulates metabolism including glucose and fatty acid catabolism. High levels are associated with low body fat. levels decline. This causes insulin resistance and increased risk for type 2 diabetes.
It is just as important when you eat as what you eat. It isn’t just an issue of how many calories you consume; it is also an issue of how efficiently you can metabolize the calories you do consume. Eating in harmony with leptin is by far the best way to improve metabolic efficiency.

Gut Flora Can Alter Eating Behavior
The idea that the type of bacteria you have in your digestive tract can actually determine your eating behavior is something to pause for a moment and think about. I am saying that completely foreign bacteria can direct your subconscious brain how to behave in relation to food intake, a statement that is consistent with the latest study on the subject.
Researchers from the French Institute for Agricultural Research transferred the intestinal bacteria of obesity prone or obesity resistant rats into the intestinal tracts of germ free mice recipients, therefore having no innate gut microbiota. Some animals were fed a regular diet, whereas others were provided unlimited access to a high fat diet. Food intake and weight gain were monitored for eight weeks, and intestinal samples were analyzed for a variety of physiologic markers of metabolism and normal feedback mechanisms known to play a role in maintenance of energy balance.
Mice that received intestinal bacteria from obesity prone animals ate more food, gained more weight, and became more obese than those that received microbiota from obesity resistant animals. Animals with microbiota transferred from obesity prone animals also exhibited changes in intestinal nutrient sensors and gut peptide levels, likely influencing how the animals responded to eating.
Behavioral impulses in response to food signaling are of fundamental importance to the survival of the human race. If your gut flora is imbalanced, they can generate signals within your gut that cause peptides to form that communicate to your brain and dictate your eating behavior.

Vicious cycle of over-eating and feeling depressed explained
As is the case with drug addicts, a vicious cycle sets in where "food-highs" are used as a way to combat depression. "Data shows that obesity is associated with increased risk of developing depression, but we have very little understanding of the neural mechanisms and brain reward patterns that link the two," Fulton said. "We are demonstrating for the first time that the chronic consumption of palatable, high-fat diets has pro-depressive effects."
A molecule in the brain known as dopamine enables the brain to rewards us with good feelings, encouraging us to learn certain kinds of behaviour. This chemical is the same in humans as it is in mice and other animals. The research team feed mice different kinds of food and monitored how the diet affects the way the animals behave. Fulton and her colleagues use a variety of scientifically validated techniques to evaluate the relationship between rewarding mice with food and their resulting behaviour and emotions. The team is also contributing to the improvement of these techniques, such as the one demonstrated in the video. Later, the team actually looks at the brains of the mice to see how they have changed.
Mice that have been fed a higher-fat diet exhibit signs of being anxious, such as an avoidance of open areas, and of being depressed, such as making less of an effort to escape when trapped. Moreover, their brains have been physically altered by their experiences. For example, CREB is a molecule that controls the activation of genes involved in the functioning of our brains and is well known for its contribution to memory formation. CREB is much more activated in the brains of higher-fat diet mice. Finally, these mice have higher levels of corticosterone, a hormone that is associated with stress.
Fulton and her team are part of a research network that is working together to address the biological reasons for obesity and its related diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, some cancers, and of course depression. She is based at the Montreal Diabetes Centre, an institution associated with the CHUM and four Montreal universities that brings together facilities for clinical research, cell biology and microscopy research, and rodent physiology research, such as that involved in the depression study.
"Although popular culture jokes about these illnesses and even mocks the people who are suffering, obesity is a serious and major public health issue that already affects hundreds of millions of people. As a society, we must avoid creating stigma and discriminating against obese and depressed people," Fulton said. "With regards to research, it is urgent that we identify the molecules and neural pathways involved in obesity and obesity-related illnesses. My colleagues and I are committed to identifying the brain circuitry involved in these diseases and to improving the tools available to researchers working in the same field."
