(1888PressRelease) April 24, 2012 - Houston Texas - "I will be lighting mine in memory of my only child Ryan who died from meningococcal disease and all the Meningitis Angels. If we do this around the world there should be a candle burning somewhere for the next 24 hours," Milley said.

Meningococcal disease is a sudden aggressive illness that can lead to death within 24-48 hours of the first symptoms. Survivors may suffer permanent brain damage, learning disabilities, vision and hearing loss, organ damage and limb loss.
"Before vaccinations, thousands of infants and toddlers died or were left debilitated from Hib and Pneumococcal meningitis. Thanks to vaccines, these are almost eradicated in the US. However tweens and teens are still among the highest risk for meningococcal disease and the hardest to reach for health care and vaccinations. So awareness and vaccination programs such as those in Kansas are imperative," Milley said.

MA announced today the launch of a national contest that would have tweens and teens ages 10-18 submit a photo of themselves getting their meningitis shot. Those ages 10-17 must have a parent's permission to enter. The nationwide events kicked off last week in Topeka Kansas. A state resolution declaring April 16-20, Kansas Meningitis Awareness Week and recognizing World Meningitis Day was presented to Meningitis Angels, on the capitol steps, by Kansas Senator Vicki Schmidt. Partners for awareness events throughout the week included the Kansas Department of Health and Environment's Immunization Program (KDHEIP), multiple county health departments, Dillion Pharmacies, school districts, the Topeka Cruzline, health care providers and others. This was also a very important week for the prevention of vaccine-preventable disease in infants. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) chose this week for National Infant Immunization Week.

Milley will close out the week April 26, as a speaker at the Vaccines For Children (VFC) Bi-national Conference in South Texas. This event is hosted by the Hidalgo County Health Department and will host speakers from the CDC, Mexico and the Texas Health Department.

"We must do everything to prevent this deadly disease in the age groups where it is preventable. It is the right thing to do. No infant, child or adult should die or be left debilitated from a vaccine-preventable disease, especially one as deadly as meningitis," concluded Milley.

Higher Protein Intake Lowers Blood Pressure in Overweight Adults

Once individuals begin to gain weight then their cardiovascular system is placed into a situation of ongoing inflammatory distress that eventually results in blood pressure elevating.  A new study makes it clear that an increase in dietary protein can have a huge benefit on reversing this trend, helping to lower blood pressure.

Many overweight people actually eat plenty of protein along with a lot of other junk calories, which will obviously not lower blood pressure due to the excess consumption of calories in general.  In this randomized, double-blind study participants consumed 60 grams of protein shakes compared to 60 grams of carbohydrate shakes per day as part of their diet.  The participants were all overweight and had untreated elevated blood pressure.  4 weeks of the additional protein enabled participants to lower their blood pressure significantly, which did not happen in the carbohydrate group.

All calories are not the same.  Adequate protein without other junk in the diet is vital for metabolism to work properly, especially getting higher protein intake at breakfast.  I have previously reviewed the science on this issue in my in depth article, Dairy, and Especially Whey, are Cardio Friendly Foods.  Whey protein has been shown to lower inflammation, boost adiponectin Protein hormone that modulates metabolism including glucose and fatty acid catabolism. High levels are associated with low body fat. (reducing insulin resistance), help weight loss, and lower blood pressure.

Our government insists that all calories are the same and bases public health policy on a flagrant lack of understanding of metabolic efficiency.  It is little wonder that the obesity epidemic has occurred on the watch of federal officials telling people to eat like a pyramid, apparently so they could also look that way.

Folic Acid for Blood Pressure, B6 for Circulatory Inflammation

B vitamins must be obtained from your diet or supplements as your body cannot synthesize them.  Several new studies show the vital importance of the B vitamins to your cardiovascular health, including the prevention of developing high blood pressure and a rather dramatic reduction of circulatory inflammation.

One study followed young adults for 20 years to see who developed high blood pressure, analyzing their dietary folate intake and verifying blood folate levels.  Those with the highest intake of folic acid were 52% less likely to develop high blood pressure.  The researchers believed this was either due to the ability of folic acid to reduce cardio-toxic levels of homocysteine It is a homologue of the amino acid cysteine that is synthesized from methionine An essential amino acid which serves as a methyl donor and is involved with the biosynthesis of other nutrients. Improper conversion is associated with production of homocysteine and atherosclerosis. which requires adequate Folic Acid, B12, and B6 to function properly. Elevated levels have been associated with heart disease, thrombosis, strokes, Alzheimer's disease, and other disorders. and/or to the ability of folic acid to help produce friendly nitric oxide that helps to relax your vascular system.

Another study showed that 4 weeks of supplementation with 40 mg of B6 per day in patients with angina dramatically lowered multiple markers of circulatory inflammation, including C reactive protein ( CRP C-reactive protein. It is an acute phase protein that increases during systemic inflammation. It is a general way to assess cardiovascular disease risk. A more sensitive test for heart disease risk is hs-CRP, highly sensitive CRP. ).

Vitamin E in diet protects against many cancers, study suggests

While the question of whether vitamin E prevents or promotes cancer has been widely debated in scientific journals and in the news media, scientists at the Center for Cancer Prevention Research, at Rutgers Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy, and the Cancer Institute of New Jersey, believe that two forms of vitamin E -- gamma and delta-tocopherols -- found in soybean, canola and corn oils as well as nuts do prevent colon, lung, breast and prostate cancers.

"There are studies suggesting that vitamin E actually increases the risk of cancer and decreases bone density," says Chung S. Yang, director of the center. "Our message is that the vitamin E form of gamma-tocopherols, the most abundant form of vitamin E in the American diet, and delta-tocopherols, also found in vegetable oils, are beneficial in preventing cancers while the form of vitamin E, alpha- tocopherol, the most commonly used in vitamin E supplements, has no such benefit."

Yang and colleagues, Nanjoo Suh and Ah-Ng Tony Kong, summarized their findings recently in Cancer Prevention Research, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research. In a Commentary, "Does Vitamin E Prevent or Promote Cancer?"

the Rutgers scientists discuss animal studies done at Rutgers as well as human epidemiological studies that have examined the connection between vitamin E and cancer.

Yang says Rutgers scientists conducting animal studies for colon, lung, breast and prostate cancer found that the forms of vitamin E in vegetable oils, gamma and delta-tocopherols, prevent cancer formation and growth in animal models.

"When animals are exposed to cancer-causing substances, the group that was fed these tocopherols in their diet had fewer and smaller tumors," Yang says. "When cancer cells were injected into mice these tocopherols also slowed down the development of tumors."

In researching colon cancer, Yang pointed to another recently published paper in Cancer Prevention Research indicating that the delta-tocopherol form of vitamin E was more effective than other forms of vitamin E in suppressing the development of colon cancer in rats.

This is good news for cancer research. Recently, in one of the largest prostate cancer clinical trials in the United States and Canada, scientists found that the most commonly used form of vitamin E supplements, alpha-tocopherol, not only did not prevent prostate cancer, but its use significantly increased the risk of this disease among healthy men.

This is why, Yang says, it is important to distinguish between the different forms of vitamin E and conduct more research on its cancer preventive and other biological effects.

"For people who think that they need to take vitamin E supplements," Yang says, "taking a mixture of vitamin E that resembles what is in our diet would be the most prudent supplement to take."

"Drug addiction persists as a major problem in the United States," said Patricia Sue Grigson, Ph.D., professor, Department of Neural and Behavioral Sciences. "Likewise, excessive food intake, like binge eating, has become problematic. Substance-abuse and binge eating are both characterized by a loss of control over consumption. Grigson and her colleagues found a link between bingeing on fat and the development of cocaine-seeking and -taking behaviors in rats, suggesting that conditions promoting excessive behavior toward one substance can increase the probability of excessive behavior toward another. They report their results in Behavioral Neuroscience.

The researchers used rats to test whether a history of binge eating on fat would augment addiction-like behavior toward cocaine by giving four groups of rats four different diets: normal rat chow; continuous ad lib access to an optional source of dietary fat; one hour of access to optional dietary fat daily; and one hour of access to dietary fat on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. All four groups also had unrestricted access to nutritionally complete chow and water. The researchers then assessed the cocaine-seeking and -taking behaviors.

"Fat bingeing behaviors developed in the rats with access to dietary fat on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays -- the group with the most restricted access to the optional fat," Grigson said.

This group tended to take more cocaine late in training, continued to try to get cocaine when signaled it was not available, and worked harder for cocaine as work requirements increased.

"While the underlying mechanisms are not known, one point is clear from behavioral data: A history of bingeing on fat changed the brain, physiology, or both in a manner that made these rats more likely to seek and take a drug when tested more than a month later," Grigson said. "We must identify these predisposing neurophysiological changes."

While the consumption of fat in and of itself did not increase the likelihood of subsequent addiction-like behavior for cocaine, the irregular binge-type manner in which the fat was eaten proved critical. Rats that had continuous access to fat consumed more fat than any other group, but were three times less likely to exhibit addiction-like behavior for cocaine than the group with access only on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

"Indeed, while about 20 percent of those rats and humans exposed to cocaine will develop addiction-like behavior for the drug under normal circumstances, in our study, the probability of addiction to cocaine increased to approximately 50 (percent) for subjects with a history of having binged on fat," Grigson said.

Future studies will look more closely at how bingeing can lead to addiction-like behaviors -- whether bingeing on sugar or a mixture of sugar and fat also promotes cocaine or heroin addiction, for example, and whether bingeing on a drug, in turn, increases the likelihood of bingeing on fat.
