Pictures of Fatty, Sugary Foods May Spur Cravings

HealthDay – 31 mins ago WEDNESDAY, June 27 (HealthDay News) -- Looking at pictures of hamburgers, cupcakes and other high-calorie edibles can trigger cravings for fattening foods, especially if you're drinking something sweet at the time, according to a new study.

Researchers from the University of Southern California found that drinking a sugary beverage while viewing these foods activates appetite and reward centers in the brain, which could play a role in obesity.

"Studies have shown that advertisements featuring food make us think of eating, but our research looked at how the brain responds to food cues and how that increases hunger and desire for certain foods," said the study's principal investigator, Kathleen Page, assistant professor of clinical medicine at the university's Keck School of Medicine, in a university news release.

"This stimulation of the brain's reward areas may contribute to overeating and obesity, and has important public health implications," said Page.

In conducting the study, the researchers measured the brain responses of 13 obese, Hispanic females, aged 15 to 25 years, as they looked at both high-calorie and low-calorie foods.

Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), the women's brains were scanned twice as they viewed images of foods such as hamburgers, cookies, cakes, fruits and vegetables.

After seeing all of the images, they were asked to rate their hunger as well as their desire for sweet or savory foods.

Halfway through the scans, the women drank 50 grams of glucose, which is similar to drinking a can of sugary soda. In a separate instance, they drank 50 grams of fructose. Glucose and fructose are found in table sugar and high-fructose corn syrup.

"We hypothesized that the reward areas in the women's brains would be activated when they were looking at high-calorie foods, and that did happen," said Page. "What we didn't expect was that consuming the glucose and fructose would increase their hunger and desire for savory foods."

The researchers pointed out that fructose resulted in more intense cravings and hunger among the women than glucose.

"Our bodies are made to eat food and store energy, and in prehistoric days, it behooved us to eat a lot of high-calorie foods because we didn't know when the next meal was coming," Page said.

"But now we have much more access to food, and this research indicates added sweeteners might be affecting our desire for it," she added in the news release.

The researchers said they limited the study to Hispanic women because research has indicated women are more sensitive to food cues, and the Hispanic community has a high incidence of obesity and type 2 diabetes.

More studies are needed to explore whether these cravings are due to obesity or genetics, the authors noted.

The study was presented Tuesday at the Endocrine Society's annual meeting in Houston. Data and conclusions of research presented at meetings should be considered preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed medical journal.

7 Must Eat Foods For Younger Looking Skin

June 22, 2012 by admin

We’ve all been told at some point in our lives, just how important nutrition is, and how a well balanced diet can have many benefits, so it is very little surprise that those benefits extend to the skin as well.

Consuming good, healthy food is the key, so you’re going to want lots of fruit and vegetables, including those leafy greens that are just oh so nutritious.

While these fruit and vegetables are good for the whole body, some in particular have definite positive effects of holding back the aging process of the skin, help keeping that youthful blush for longer. Long term eating of them may well help in partly turning back the clock for our skin.

Carrots, Tomatoes and Sweet Potatoes

These are all high in betacarotene which the body converts to vitamin A (retinol). This chemical stimulates skin cell growth which helps build collagen, this is a structural protein present in the skin which is essential for its elasticity.

Not only will your elastin not lose its ‘springy’ nature as fast, but you’ll also probably notice that your skin, in general, wrinkles less and seems to be healthier overall. Carrots are also a great source of fibre, biotin and contain vitamins B6, C and K.

Blackberries, Blueberries, Strawberries, and Plums.

Recent published studies of these four fruits have between them some of the highest antioxidant properties of any food. The benefits of these foods for healthy skin are that they mop up free radicals and help in the prduction of collagen.

Citrus Fruits ie Oranges, Lemons etc

The pith found in the rinds of citrus fruits are rich in bioflavonoids which is a biologically active compound that can help strengthen the tiny blood capillaries in the skin and prevent unattractive broken veins.

Hazelnuts, Walnuts and Brazilnuts

Nuts are high in essential fatty acids which add to those already naturally present in skin cells.

Collagen that is lost is helped to be replaced by the fatty acids help to keep skin firm. Nuts also have certain anti-inflammatory properties which can help the skin stay smooth and unpimpled.

Kiwi Fruit and Avocado

Both of these are rich in the antioxidant vitamin C, which is a good antioxidant helping to protect the skin against ageing. Avocados also contain essential fats, the building blocks of collagen, a structural protein contained in the skin essential for elasticity. You can try applying mashed up avocado to your skin externally too as this will help in keeping the skin nourished and hydrated.

Olive oil

Cooking your food in extra virgin olive oil rather than standard vegetable oil will help. Olive oil contains strong antioxidants which protect the skin from pollutants. It also combats the oxidising effects of the sun on our skin. This oxidation can trigger more skin cells to die which will leave the skin thinner and speed up the ageing process. Applying extra virgin olive oil to the skin after sun exposure may help to protect the skin against damage although no definitive studies have been carried out.

Green Tea

The benefits of drinking have been well reported and could be higher than any other food that we eat when it comes to the skin. Some recent studies have suggested that it could even have the effect of preventing or reducing the risk of skin cancer.

A study recently published study in the Archives of Dermatology shows that it does not matter if we drink it or apply to the skin exteranlly, green tea can reduce the risk of damage from burning rays of the sun found in ultraviolet light and this can reduce the risk of skin cancer.  Green tea is rich in antioxidants which can reduce inflammation and protect cell membranes.

Green tea is also high in polyphenols these are compounds that eliminate cancer causing free radicals. Recent research done at the Medical College of Georgia shows that the type of polyphenol most abundant in green tea namely  EGCG for short could act as a fountain of youth of sorts for skin by possibly reactivating dying skin cells. In addition to these skin helping properties, green tea is also high in vitamins C, D and K, plus has riboflavin, zinc, calcium, magnesium and iron which are necessary for the body too.

In Conclusion

Eating these types of food will help to hold back the effects of the passage of time that our skin reflects and keep our youthful looks for longer. There are other ways we can help to keep both our bodies and therefore our skin in great condition.

2 Shocking Foods That Make You Gain Weight

Sugar Is Toxic: What Does That Mean? Is Sugar Toxic? This question was covered on CBS' "60 Minutes," last Sunday April 1st. Not an April Fool's joke, the report was about a study done by Dr. Robert Lustig who is a pediatric endocrinologist in San Francisco. Let's define some terms to make this easier to understand: "Pediatric"… By: Patty Allread in  Health and Fitness  >  Nutrition   Apr 09, 2012   2   Likes: 1

How high fat foods impact diabetes and metabolic syndrome

ScienceDaily (May 22, 2012) — A University of Michigan Health System study provides new clues about the health-damaging molecular changes set in motion by eating high-fat foods.

See Also:Health & MedicineDiabetesCholesterolDiet and Weight LossObesityHypertensionFitnessReferenceBlood sugarSouth Beach dietDiabetes mellitus type 2Hyperglycemia

A better understanding of the body's response to indulgent eating could lead to new approaches for treating diabetes and metabolic syndrome. High-fat foods can contribute to obesity, which increases the risk for developing type 2 diabetes.

The researchers learned a key protein called Bcl10 is needed for the free fatty acids -- which are found in high fat food and stored in body fat -- to impair insulin action and lead to abnormally high blood sugar.

In the laboratory study, mice deficient in Bcl10 were protected from developing insulin resistance when fed a high-fat diet. The findings will be published May 31 in Cell Reports.

Insulin helps control blood sugar, but insulin resistance can lead to the abnormally high blood sugar levels that are the hallmark of diabetes. Insulin resistance can occur as part of metabolic syndrome, a cluster of conditions that increase the risk for type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

As millions of Americans become overweight and obese, type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome are on the rise.

"The study also underscores how very short-term changes in diet such as high-fat eating for only a few days, perhaps even less, can induce a state of insulin resistance," says senior study author Peter C. Lucas, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of pathology at the University of Michigan Medical School.

Researchers began by investigating how free fatty acids induce inflammation and impair insulin action in the liver. It's thought the liver is a major target for the harmful effects of free fatty acids.

In the liver, free fatty acids undergo metabolism to produce diacylglycerols prior to inducing the inflammatory response. Diacylglycerols also activate NF-B signaling which has been linked with cancer, metabolic and vascular diseases.

The team of researchers concluded that Bcl10 is required for fatty acids to induce inflammation and insulin resistance. In the study, Bcl10-deficient mice showed significant improvement in regulation of blood sugar.

"We were surprised to learn that Bcl10, a protein previously known for its critical role in immune cell response to infection, also plays a critical role in the liver's response to fatty acid," says Lucas.. "This is an example of nature co-opting a mechanism fundamental to the immune system and using it in a metabolic organ, in this case, the liver."

"These findings reveal a new and important role for Bcl10 and could lead to novel ideas for treating patients with metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes," says co-senior author Linda M. McAllister-Lucas, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of pediatric hemotology/oncology.

Stomach Fat Burning Foods

May 15, 2012 by adminAt what time it comes to eliminating kilos, its not just crucial to become more active and indulge in more training, but its similarly important to modify your diet.

One focal idea when changing your eating routine and eating habits is not to cut down on your caloric consumption too largely as this could do further damage than good and in due course could destroy your fat reduction effort.

Instead, what you ought to begin focusing on, is looking at the types of foods you munch on and observe if you could change a number of of the more “bad” ones with some further “good” types. I’m going reveal to you 2 super-foods that if consumed repeatedly (several times a week), should aid you to melt off a couple more inches.

Fat Eliminating Food 1 – Protein

Although it is not accurately a food, protein-rich foods are terrific since they don’t effect your bodily sugar levels in the identical way that sweets and carbs do.

Sugars promote the emission of a hormone named insulin that is accountable for storing surplus carbohydrates in the system as fat.

The 2nd property of protein is that it requires a lot more time to process than most alternative sorts of foods. This means you will feel satisfied for much longer seeing that carb-type foods metabolize very rapidly causing your body glucose level to plunge shortly after, requiring you to eat again.

Some of the greatest protein-rich foods include: Slim cuts of meat, turkey, chicken, fish, eggs, beans and grains. Have a go at eating more of these forms of foods throughout the week whereas at the same time dropping the quantity of carbohydrates that you eat and you should find that you can go a lot longer between feeds and after you do eat.

Fat Eliminating Food 2 – Low-Fat Dairy

There have been several studies and plentiful research completed on the effects that low fat dairy foods such as zero or lowered fat yoghurt and milk exhibit on fat burning. One inquiry concluded that women who ate these kinds of foods a few times each day, lost extra flab as opposed to those women who did not have very much dairy at all.

In a parallel report, it was found that persons who had around two to 3 cups of zero fat milk gained much less pounds over two years as opposed to persons who were on a lower calcium style of diet.

This would seem to hint that the minerals enclosed inside diary foodstuffs are helpful for wellbeing and have a function when it comes to getting rid of extra fat. Dairy foods are renowned for their ability to help harden your teeth and bones, however not many individuals know about their fat-busting potential.

If zero fat dairy isn’t your cup of tea, have a go with low-fat foods and little by little lower back from there. Eventually you will begin to enjoy the flavor and your body shall thank you too since it will not have as much excess fat to deal with.

Eight Fat Burning Foods

May 6, 2012 by admin

1. Almonds

These nuts are considered a “super food”. It has many benefits to people who want to lose fat and keep it off. First of all they fill you up in small portions. That means you can eat a handful to curb your appetite for long periods of time. They are full of nutrients like vitamin E. Almonds also pack on fiber, protein, and the healthy kinds of fats. Not to mention they lower cholesterol.

2. Protein Powder

Most protein powders are packed with whey protein which is the most effective kind for losing fat and gaining muscle mass. Anyone who weight trains has this stuff as a staple in their diet. It is pretty powerful stuff. It is not just for body builders. Anyone looking to gain lean muscle and lose fat needs to try some kind of protein powder.

3. Salmon

Another gut busting portion is salmon.

Like almonds it kills many birds with one stone. It may be the best fish for you. It is packed with protein. Salmon is full of fatty acids that help lower cholesterol. There are many other key nutrients in salmon such as niacin, vitamin B-12, and magnesium.

4. Oatmeal

A bowl of oatmeal a day will keep cholesterol at bay. That is what my doctor told me when I was struggling with heart disease a couple years back. Oatmeal is full of fiber that is very good for cleaning out your arteries. If you are looking for taste without the sugar then I recommend the Quakers quick oats. I just heat up a bowl in the microwave for about a minute. Oatmeal is also great with sliced apples or blueberries.

5. Spinach

Another super food, spinach is packed with plenty of nutrients.

By including spinach in your diet you are protecting yourself from heart disease, osteoporosis, arthritis, and other diseases. Leafy greens are powerful vegetables so try and get at least one serving in for dinner each day.

6. Blueberries

There is no fruit with more antioxidant power than blueberries. Antioxidants prevent the build up of free radicals which keep you from being sick. They are also a great source of fiber like most fruits. Throw some on your cereal for a delicious breakfast.

7. Peanut Butter

All natural peanut butter is an excellent source of vitamin E without the extra fat and sugar you get in the brand names. It goes very good with bananas. Also a great source of protein, healthy fats, and some fiber thrown into the mix. Having a spoonful from time to time can get rid of your hunger for a while.

8. Beans

Last but not least is another one of nature’s wonderful creations. Baked beans not only taste good but they also hold a lot of fiber, protein, good fats, and many vitamins and minerals. Have them on the side for a balanced meal.

Amazing Weight Loss Foods

April 28, 2012 by admin

There are many ways to effectively drop pounds. A healthy diet and exercise are keys, but there are also specific weight loss foods that can trigger the body’s metabolism to boost weight loss for a more effective loss strategy. These foods can be found almost anywhere, and most taste delicious. Anyone serious about losing weight should try to incorporate as many of these foods into their diet as possible. Not only will you lose weight more quickly, but your overall healthy will be boosted as well. These are truly amazing foods for any diet.

A great metabolism booster is vitamin C. This vitamin is present in many foods and there is a very high concentration in citrus foods. Just adding an orange to your diet everyday can increase weight loss results. Oranges are inexpensive as well, which make them a wonderful diet food.

Any other fruit can be a great boost to a weight loss plan, as well.

Replace unhealthy snacks with fruit and you may be surprised at the result. Fruits are very rich in many different vitamins and also can satisfy cravings for sweets and even lessen the desire to consume large portions at mealtimes. Eating fruit every day can keep your body functioning in top shape.

Eggs are, surprisingly enough, a food that can really help with weight loss. Eating an egg for breakfast every day causes a full feeling that can last for hours. Eggs also provide many nutrients for heart health and muscle retention. Eggs are a great way to eat well while losing weight.

Another wonderful diet food is beans and lentils. These protein-rich foods can cause a feeling of fullness for hours. They satisfy energy requirements of the body even under rigorous strain.

Beans are a great alternative to the higher fat levels contained in meats because they provide a comparable level of protein and nutrition.

Yogurt is one of the best weight loss foods. It provides protein, healthy nutrients, and a perfect balance of fat and carbs. People who eat yogurt regularly are much more likely to lose weight and keep it off.

Fat Burning Foods Diet

April 25, 2012 by admin

Burning fat for some people is like David vs Goliath. It’s a battle against good and evil. The fat on some days comes off without a problem, on others, its stubborn like a child. It doesn’t always have to be like this though. With the age of scientific nutrition, we can analyze which foods are the best help us burn body fat. Here are some that do this very thing.

Milk is one of these fat burning foods. In studies, subjects who consumed milk lost more fat than those who did not. Scientists believe this because insulin levels do not rise significantly when someone drinks milk. The carb content is low on the glycemic index. Also milk is high in calcium and protein with 8 grams per glass.
Whole grain cereal is another fat burning food because of its complex carbohydrates. It goes back to insulin again. When someone consumes whole grains such as oatmeal, there is a small release of insulin and a steady blood sugar levels.

Jalapenos have been known for a long time to be a potent fat burning food.

This is because of a chemical called capsaicin which gives peppers their potent flavor but also has been shown to speed up someone’s metabolism. A high metabolism equals more calories burned and body fat lost.

Another potent pepper that has the same effects and jalapenos are its cousin Habaneros.

Habaneros are known as the hottest pepper on earth. I would even guess this means there are more potent when it comes to burning more calories. In studies, scientists have found that when combined with coffee, red pepper snacks have been found to burn up to 1,000 more calories per day than subjects who did not do this.

This is just a small portion of some of the fat burning foods that I talk about in my fat loss manual that you can get for free.

10 Dirty Foods You're Eating

ABCNEWS.com

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that every day, 200,000 Americans contract food poisoning. But Philip Tierno, Ph.D., a microbiologist at New York University medical center and author of The Secret Life of Germs, pegs the true eat-'em-and-weep rate at around 800,000 a day. "Everyone in this country will have at least one incident of sickness this year attributable to a foodborne virus, bacteria, or toxin," Tierno says. Except that most of us won't know what hit us; we'll chalk up the usually mild symptoms -- nausea, diarrhea, cramping -- to "that stomach flu that's going around."

After considering incidence of foodborne outbreaks, relative danger of the dirt, and how often the carrier is found on our forks, we came up with a list of the edibles most likely to send your day spiraling down the crapper. We then assembled simple strategies for decontaminating the prime suspects -- from the supermarket to the supper table -- without worrying yourself sick. And what if, as with Jeff Cook, someone else does the cooking? We'll also tell you how to spot a dirty restaurant. Add it all up and what we're giving you is a recipe for clean living. (And check out The Healthiest Foods in America to find out which fare you should be adding to your shopping cart.)

The 10 Dirtiest Foods You're EatingChicken

The dirt: Never mind cigarettes; the Surgeon General should slap a warning label on chicken. Recent nationwide testing by Consumers Union, the advocacy group behind Consumer Reports, notes that of the 484 raw broilers examined, 42 percent were infected by Campylobacter jejuni, and 12 percent by Salmonella enterides.

The latest USDA research notes similar Salmonella levels. Now add in the fact that we each consume about 70 pounds of chicken a year -- more than our intake of beef, pork, or turkey -- and it's a wonder broilers don't come with barf bags.

At the supermarket: Look for birds labeled "free range." Close quarters in the henhouse give bad bugs the chance to spread, as do high-volume processing operations. Free-range chickens, which are given more room to roost and are usually slaughtered in smaller numbers, present a potentially safer option. For example, Ranger chickens, a free-range brand sold in the Pacific Northwest, came up negative for Salmonella and Campylobacter in Consumers Union's tests.

At home: To help prevent foodborne illness, bypass rinsing your raw bird in the sink, and instead put it directly into a baking dish or pan. This shortcut reduces the odds of sullying counters and other foods, says Janet B. Anderson, R.D., director of the Safe Food Institute in North Logan, Utah. If you used a cutting board, clean it (and the knife) with a mild, dilute bleach solution. As for your heat treatment, cook breasts and other cuts until the temperature hits 180

Glycemic index foods at breakfast can control blood sugar throughout the day

ScienceDaily (Mar. 30, 2012) — Eating foods at breakfast that have a low glycemic index may help prevent a spike in blood sugar throughout the morning and after the next meal of the day, researchers said at the Institute of Food Technologists' Wellness 12 meeting.

See Also:Health & MedicineDiet and Weight LossNutritionObesityCholesterolDiabetesStaying HealthyReferenceSouth Beach dietGlycemic indexWhole grainBlood sugar

These breakfast foods also can increase feelings of satiety and fullness and may make people less likely to overeat throughout the day, according to recent presentations by Kantha Shelke, Ph.D., principal, Corvus Blue LLC, and Richard Mattes, M.P.H., R.D., distinguished professor of foods and nutrition at Purdue University.

The glycemic index ranks foods on the extent to which they raise blood sugar levels after eating. Foods with a high index are rapidly digested and result in high fluctuations in blood sugar levels. Foods with a low glycemic index produce gradual rises in blood sugar and insulin levels and are considered healthier, especially for people with diabetes.

Mattes' research specifically focused on the advantages of having almonds, a low glycemic index food, with the morning meal. In his study, published last year in the Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism, participants who ate a breakfast containing whole almonds experienced longer feelings of fullness and had lower blood glucose concentrations after breakfast and lunch, compared to those who did not have a low-glycemic breakfast.

When a low glycemic food is added to the diet, people spontaneously choose to eat less at other times throughout the day. Mattes added that while the calories need to be taken into consideration as part of a person's overall diet, almonds can be incorporated in moderate amounts without an effect on body weight.

Both Mattes and Shelke stressed the importance of eating a healthy, low-glycemic breakfast in maintaining a healthy weight and blood sugar levels. A 2009 study found that about 30 percent of people skip breakfast one to three times per week. Among those who eat breakfast, cold cereal is the most popular (83 percent), followed by eggs (71 percent). In addition to low glycemic index, Dr. Shelke said the ideal breakfast for consumers has these attributes:

• Savory

• Portable

• Pleasing texture •

Fills you up for extended periods of time

• Satiates quickly so less is consumed

• Affordable for the whole family to eat every day

• Non-fried

• Delicious without making you feeling guilty

"This is a very tall order for food product manufacturers," Shelke said. "It takes a lot of skill and understanding."

While it may present challenges for food manufacturers, it is well worth it to develop these products because of the prevalence of diabetes and pre-diabetes in the United States and beyond. It is estimated that by 2030, more than 16 percent of the global population will have a blood sugar problem.

"Most of the risk factors are things that can be managed and modified," Shelke said. "We can reverse pre-diabetes and prevent it from becoming diabetes. Food has become the reason for what's ailing us, but it can actually be a solution in a number of different ways."
