How to Burn Calories: 1 Odd Trick to Make it More Effective

.

If you have observed the work of a hotel room cleaning attendant, you’ll know that their scrubbing, vacuuming, pushing and pulling, and lifting things inside the hotel room, during cleaning period, are very good for their health. What’s more, this cleaning period happens so fast it will only take 25 minutes or less per hotel room. In an average day at work, a room attendant can easily clean 15 hotel rooms.

These hotel maids have led such an active lifestyle that they became the center of this study. Did they know that their work is actually good for their health, lowers their blood pressure, and helps them lose weight? What the researchers did was to divide the group into two.

Group 1. This group was well informed of the huge health benefits of their work, as to how many calories they burn in their daily scrubbing, vacuuming, lifting objects, and so on. The researchers made sure that these hotel maids were well aware of the benefits by giving them handouts and daily posters. Nothing was altered in their eating habits and practices (whether they smoke or drink alcohol).

Group 2. This group was never informed that their work was actually giving them tremendous health benefits. Most certainly they were not given a hint as to how much calories they burn each day while performing their daily routines as room attendants. And also nothing was altered in their eating habits and practices.

Before the test begun, both groups were physically examined for various health tests, plus weight-ins. And they were told to follow their usual eating habits and practices, and their hotel managers made sure they had the usual work load.

Four weeks have passed and the results were in!

Group 1. This group gave significant improvements:

reduced body fat lowered blood pressure and body mass index lowered waist-to-hip ratio

Group 2. This group showed none of the significant improvements discovered in group 1.

Surprising huh! A classic placebo effect working at its best.

Now, you can apply the same technique to your workout and daily nutrition. If you can list down the number of calories that you burn by performing your favorite exercises and pin it where you can see it, I’m sure you’ll have more consistent results. Another thing that helps is believing that exercise can really give you a stronger and healthier body.

This technique also applies to your daily nutrition, if you actively think that the healthy foods you eat will make you leaner, stronger, and healthier. I believe this mindset will also help you avoid junk food.

Carnosine is Lacking in Type 2 Diabetic Patients

Carnosine is one of the most potent nutrients known for protecting against the adverse consequences of high blood sugar.  Thus, it is a wake-up call for every type 2 diabetic to find that a new study shows that patients are lacking carnosine in their muscles.

One of the key factors to correct type 2 diabetes is an active exercise program.  This helps muscles use extra calories while reducing insulin resistance.  However, the muscles of diabetic patients are under stress, due to high blood sugar that can be acting as “cement;” it is like honey or maple syrup drying on the counter for a few days.  This process is called glycation, which means sugarcoating and cementing of flexible structures.  While one’s eyes, kidneys, and heart are very sensitive to this issue over time, in general, muscles also suffer problems.  This can prevent a person from getting a good response to exercise.

Carnosine is highly concentrated in muscles, including your heart.  It acts as both an antioxidant and anti-glycation compound, helping prevent high blood sugar from inducing damage.  Thus, it is one of the very best nutrients to help a type 2 diabetic, yet it is lacking in type 2 diabetics.  Possibly carnosine has been used up trying to defend against the problem or a non-red meat diet has predisposed a person to a lack of this nutrient. Regardless of the reason, there simply is not enough carnosine.

Carnosine does a great deal more than simply protect muscles.  It has previously been shown to prevent kidney damage from type 2 diabetes.  A new study shows that it can enhance wound healing and another shows it can help protect the vascular system in the eyes so that high blood sugar does not induce glycation damage.

Several days ago I mentioned the importance of getting iron to work properly in your body, especially if you are overweight, as are many type 2 diabetic patients are.  Carnosine is an important iron buffer compound, helping to keep iron working in a friendly way in your body.  Many studies show that carnosine also protects your brain, contributing to an anti-aging benefit.

Doses of carnosine in the range of 50 – 300 mgs are good for basic stress management and nerve health.  Doses of 1,500 mg per day are more likely to be of help for any person whose fasting blood sugar is over 90 and would like some help to protect against the glycation problems caused by high blood sugar that wreak so much health damage over time.  Of course, people must still take steps to fix their metabolism.

New pregnancy risk for babies and moms: Overweight moms with moderately high blood sugar raise health risk

ScienceDaily (Apr. 11, 2012) — Pregnant women who are overweight with moderately elevated blood sugar never set off any alarms for their physicians. The big concern was for women who were obese or who had gestational diabetes because those conditions are known to cause a host of health risks to the mom and baby.

But a new study shows these women who are just above average for weight and blood sugar are at a higher risk of bad pregnancy outcomes than previously known. In fact, this group is at higher risk than pregnant women who are obese with normal blood sugar or pregnant women who have gestational diabetes and a normal weight.

"These are women who have not been on our radar because they don't have gestational diabetes and aren't obese, but our study shows if you are one step away from each of those, you carry some significant risks," said principle investigator Boyd Metzger, M.D., a professor of medicine-endocrinology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and a physician at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. "We need to address the combination of overweight and blood sugar of these women as urgently as we do for women who are obese or have gestational diabetes."

This group of women comprised about 6 percent of the total number of women in the study. Obese women made up 16 percent of the group and those with gestational diabetes accounted for 13.7 percent.

The study also found women who are both obese and have gestational diabetes are at a much higher risk of having an adverse pregnancy than women having only one of those conditions.

The paper, published in the April issue of Diabetes Care, is from the Hyperglycemia and Adverse Pregnancy Outcome (HAPO) Study and includes 23,316 women from nine countries.

One of the adverse outcomes for these mothers is having large babies, the result of fat accumulation. Large babies increase the risk of injury to the baby during vaginal delivery, increasing the likelihood of a Caesarean section.

The study found when the mothers are obese and have gestational diabetes, the babies weigh 340 grams more than babies of mothers with normal weight and blood sugar. When the mothers are overweight (but not obese) with above-average blood sugar levels, the babies weigh 214 grams more. Mothers of normal weight but with gestational diabetes have babies who weigh 164 grams more. And obese mothers with normal glucose levels have babies with an increased weight of 174 grams.

A pregnant woman's higher blood sugar level and weight also can lead to higher insulin and lower blood sugar levels in a newborn. In turn, these effects may eventually trigger obesity and diabetes, perhaps as early as childhood.

"The big message from this is when you look at the impact of nutrition, metabolism and weight on pregnancy outcomes, every woman - on her first prenatal visit -- should get a prescription for a session with a dietician and an appropriate healthy eating plan for her pregnancy," said Metzger, also the Tom D. Spies Professor of Metabolism and Nutrition at Northwestern's Feinberg School. "This doesn't happen, but it should, and insurance companies should reimburse it."

The research is supported by the National Institutes of Health.

US adds clot risks to some birth control labels

US adds clot risks to some birth …

US health authorities on Tuesday ordered revised labels on some types of birth control including German pharmaceutical giant Bayer's Yaz pills to advise of a possibly higher risk of blood clots.

"Women who use birth control pills with drospirenone (like Yaz) may have a higher risk of getting a blood clot," said a new Yaz label on the US Food and Drug Administration website.

"Some studies reported that the risk of blood clots was higher for women who use birth control pills that contain drospirenone than for women who use birth control pills that do not contain drospirenone."

However, the regulatory agency pointed out that studies have shown mixed results.

"The studies reviewed did not provide consistent estimates of the comparative risk of blood clots between birth control pills that contain drospirenone and those that do not," the FDA said in a statement.

"The studies also did not account for important patient characteristics (known and unknown) that may influence prescribing and that likely affect the risk of blood clots," it added.

"For these reasons, it is unclear whether the increased risk seen for blood clots in some of the epidemiologic studies is actually due to drospirenone-containing birth control pills."

Drospirenone is a synthetic progestin which can suppress ovulation and thereby prevent pregnancy either when used alone or in combination with an estrogen component.

There are 11 approved versions of such pills on the US market, including names such as Gianvi, Loryna, Ocella, Safyral, Syeda, and Zarah.

In December, a panel of experts that advises the FDA urged stronger labeling on drospirenone-containing pills, voting 21-5 that the current labels did not adequately reflect the risks and benefits.

The panel was divided on the question of whether the benefits of such pills outweighed the risks, with 15 saying "yes" and 11 saying "no."

The pills have been marketed on the basis they help alleviate premenstrual symptoms, reduce acne and cause less weight gain than competitors. They have also been the focus of numerous lawsuits.

Two recent studies in the British Medical Journal found that drugs like Yaz and Yasmin increase the risk of serious blood clots three-fold or two-fold compared to earlier-generation oral contraceptives.

The European Medicines Agency concluded last year that such birth control pills carry a higher risk of venous thromboembolism and that warning labels should be updated accordingly.

However, it noted the overall risk of blood clot from any birth control method remains small and stopped short of advising women to stop taking pills containing drospirenone.

Yaz is the second biggest selling product made by Bayer, with $1.56 billion in global sales.
