Why does a diet high in DHA improve memory?

ScienceDaily (June 28, 2012) — We've all heard that eating fish is good for our brains and memory. But what is it about DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid found in fish, that makes our memory sharper?

Researchers with the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry discovered a possible explanation and just published their findings in the peer-reviewed journal Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and Metabolism.

Principal investigator Yves Sauve and his team discovered lab models fed a high-DHA diet had 30 per cent higher levels of DHA in the memory section of the brain, known as the hippocampus, when compared to animal models on a regular, healthy diet.

"We wanted to find out how fish intake improves memory," says Sauve, a medical researcher at the University of Alberta who works in the department of physiology, the department of ophthalmology and the Centre for Neuroscience.

"What we discovered is that memory cells in the hippocampus could communicate better with each other and better relay messages when DHA levels in that region of the brain were higher. This could explain why memory improves on a high-DHA diet."

Sauve noted it is a key finding that when a diet is supplemented with DHA, that additional stores of the omega-3 fatty acid are deposited in the brain. His team confirmed this finding, a discovery other labs have noted as well.

Supplementing your diet with DHA, such as increasing fish intake or taking supplements, could prevent declining DHA levels in the brain as we age, says Sauve.

This research was funded by Alberta Innovates -- Health Solutions.

Earlier this year, Sauve and other colleagues discovered DHA prevents the accumulation of a toxic molecule at the back of the eye that causes age-related vision loss. He is continuing his research in this area.

To stay healthy and disease-free, scientists suggest a five-pronged strategy that includes everything from increasing your fish intake to undergoing hypnosis and getting your teeth cleaned for heart health.

The studies appear in the June issue of the American Journal of Medicine.

Fish
One of the easiest ways to lower the risk of colorectal cancer, the third leading cause of cancer deaths in the Western world, is to increase fish consumption, according to a study out of Xi'an, China. After reviewing 41 studies, researchers concluded that eating fresh fish on a regular basis reduces the risk of colorectal cancer by 12 percent. The protective effects are more prominent, meanwhile, in rectal versus colon cancer, at 21 percent.

Hypnosis for smokers
Quitting smoking is one of the most surefire ways to drastically cut people's risk of cancer. And while a host of programs exist to help smokers snuff out the habit, a study out of Montreal has found that those who underwent hypnotherapy were 4.55 times more likely to stop from smoking, while those who underwent acupuncture were 3.53 times more likely to abstain.

Healthy teeth, healthy heart
According to a study out of Taiwan, regular teeth cleaning can help decrease the risk for cardiovascular events. For the study, researchers examined 10,887 subjects who had undergone tooth scaling, or a deep cleaning, compared to 10,989 participants who had not. In the seven year follow-up, scientists found that those who had undergone a deep clean had a lower incidence of heart attacks, stroke and total cardiovascular events. It's believed that poor dental hygiene adds to the inflammatory burden on individuals.

Doctor-supervised weight loss
Researchers out of North Carolina suggest asking your doctor for a weight loss plan rather than shelling out money at a private weight loss center, as primary care clinics were found to be just as effective. After 12 weeks, participants lost an average of 11 percent body weight.

An aspirin a day...
A study out of Canada suggests that in addition to preventing cardiovascular disease, low-dose aspirin can also reduce other diseases like cancer.

New Techniques May Improve Infant Heart Surgery

HealthDay – 4 hrs ago WEDNESDAY, April 25 (HealthDay News) -- Two new monitoring techniques may provide early warnings about possible brain damage in children as they undergo surgery for heart defects, researchers report.

Autoregulation monitoring is a noninvasive technique that can determine when blood flow to the brain may be low. The other method, a blood test, uses a small sample of blood to detect brain-tissue injury during surgery.

Doctors previously had no way to detect brain injuries as they occurred during heart surgery.

Details of the research are to be presented Wednesday during an American Heart Association press briefing.

Brain injury occurs in 30 percent to 70 percent of infants and children who have surgery to repair congenital heart defects, which are heart abnormalities present at birth. For each 1,000 live births in the United States, about eight babies will have some type of heart defect, according to a heart association news release.

This was a pilot study to evaluate the feasibility of new ways to monitor for brain damage while children have surgery to repair heart defects. The researchers plan to conduct another study to assess the effectiveness of these brain monitoring techniques 18 months after surgery.

Researchers' data and conclusions should be considered preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed medical journal.
